Site and Product

The facility manufactures precision metal components for drivetrain and transmission applications, supplying global OEM and Tier 1 customers across the North American automotive market.

With approximately 160 employees, annual revenue of around $40M, and a production footprint of roughly 200,000 sq ft, the plant represents an important operational node within the group’s international manufacturing network.

Production is based on high-volume automated machining and manufacturing processes. Operational stability, cost control, and consistent production quality are critical to meeting the demands of international automotive customers.

Why New Plant Leadership Was Needed

At the time of the mandate, the facility was facing several operational challenges that made strengthening plant leadership necessary. The plant operated in a highly competitive automotive supply environment defined by tight margins and demanding delivery requirements. Certain programs could not be made economically viable, leading the company to decline contracts that did not meet financial targets.

At the same time, the ramp-up of automated production equipment presented operational difficulties, and maintenance delays on critical manufacturing systems were affecting production efficiency — increasing the need for stronger hands-on plant leadership.

The situation also called for clearer organizational direction and improved cross-functional collaboration to ensure stable, sustainable production going forward.

Against this backdrop, the group decided to bring in a new Plant Manager (General Manager) to stabilize operations and put the facility on a sound long-term performance trajectory.

What We Were Looking For

The search targeted a Plant Manager (General Manager) with a specific profile suited to stabilizing production and delivering sustained operational improvement. A proven track record in restructuring or turnaround situations in complex manufacturing environmentswas a core requirement — ideally in automotive supply or precision metalworking.

Beyond manufacturing and production expertise, the candidate needed a solid grasp of plant-level financial management - including fixed cost structures, operational controlling, and the economic evaluation of production programs.

Experience working with international OEM and Tier 1 customers, and a record of successfully launching new series programs under tight cost and timing constraints, was also required.

The Plant Manager holds full responsibility for the facility’s operational organization — including production, supply chain, quality, maintenance, purchasing, HR, and finance — reporting directly to the Group’s Global Director of Operations.

The combination of turnaround experience, operational leadership depth, and financial acumen significantly narrowed the relevant candidate pool.

The Search

TH Bender conducted a targeted executive search focused on experienced plant managers and operational leaders in the automotive supply industry and adjacent precision manufacturing sectors across North America. The search combined structured market analysis with direct outreach to executives from comparable production environments.

Particular emphasis was placed on candidates with demonstrated turnaround experience, high-volume production backgrounds, and a track record of managing international OEM and Tier 1 customer relationships.

In total, approximately 145 candidates were identified and directly approached against the defined profile. Around 30 expressed serious interest and were evaluated in initial conversations.

Five candidates were presented in first-round video interviews. Four were invited to in-person meetings at the facility, from which two finalists advanced to final conversations with a member of the Group Management Board.

All phases of the process were closely coordinated with the group, including regular status updates and joint candidate evaluation.

Stabilized. Strengthened. On Track.

The search resulted in the successful placement of an experienced automotive supply executive with a proven turnaround record in complex manufacturing environments.

The new Plant Manager assumed full operational responsibility for the facility and moved immediately to stabilize production processes, improve program-level profitability, and strengthen the plant’s operational leadership structure.

The placement created the foundation for sustainable improvement at the facility and supports the long-term development of the group’s North American operations.

What This Means for International Industrial Companies

Leadership transitions at North American production facilities of international industrial companies often occur at critical inflection points - when operational performance, program economics, or organizational structures need to be reset.

In the automotive supply industry in particular, plant managers must balance operational efficiency, cost control, and delivery reliability while simultaneously managing complex production systems and demanding customer requirements.

A structured executive search enables international companies to identify leaders who can stabilize facilities, strengthen operational structures, and deliver sustained performance over the long term.

Werksleitern in Nordamerika

North American production facilities of international industrial companies frequently operate in highly competitive environments.

High delivery reliability requirements, complex production processes, and tight margin structures demand very experienced operational leadership. When production programs fail to launch as planned or cost structures are not managed effectively, a facility’s financial performance can deteriorate quickly.

In these situations, strengthening plant leadership typically becomes necessary.

The plant manager carries full responsibility for the facility’s operational performance.

This includes:

  • Production output and efficiency
  • Cost control and P&L accountability
  • Delivery reliability to OEM and Tier 1 customers
  • Leadership of the operational organization

In high-volume automotive manufacturing environments, strong operational leadership is essential for stable production and sustainable profitability.

Many international companies are seeking executives who possess both a deep understanding of production and experience in the North American automotive market.

At the same time, experience with turnaround scenarios, managing international OEM clients, and overseeing the financial operations of complex manufacturing sites is often required.

This combination significantly reduces the relevant candidate pool and frequently necessitates a structured executive search approach.

The duration of an executive search depends on several factors, including the complexity of the requirement profile and the size of the relevant candidate market.

In this case, the position was filled within approximately four months — from mandate to final decision.

A structured executive search is particularly appropriate when:

  • Operational performance at a facility falls short of expectations
  • New production programs need to be successfully launched
  • A leadership change is required to stabilize the organization

A targeted executive search enables companies to identify leaders who bring both operational experience and a deep understanding of the North American market.
