The finance function of your U.S. operation

is a question of trust

CFO, Finance Director, VP Finance: we place finance leadership for U.S. operations — permanent, interim, or as an interim-to-permanent solution.

Since 2006, we’ve placed leadership positions across North America. In many client relationships, finance leadership follows the CEO or General Manager as the next critical hire — we’ve placed both sides of that sequence dozens of times.

We respond personally and confidentially.

Why the finance hire decides headquarters' trust

Finance leadership at your U.S. operation is more than a functional role. It’s the point where headquarters learns what’s actually happening in the U.S. — or doesn’t. Missed forecasts, opaque cost structures, reports that raise more questions than they answer: what looks like a process problem is almost always a leadership problem in finance.

We see this most often in bidding. Man-hour and equipment costs that haven’t been updated in years turn every quote into a guessing game dressed up as a number — and nobody notices until margins quietly erode. Fixing that isn’t a reporting exercise. It takes a finance leader willing to leave the spreadsheet, walk the shop floor, and work directly with engineering and manufacturing to rebuild what things actually cost.

Get the hire right, and you gain both: reliable numbers on the ground and trust at the ownership or board level.

The finance role is the trust axis between headquarters and the U.S. operation. It gets misjudged more often than any other function — because technical qualification alone isn't enough.
Why finance hires in the U.S.are different

A strong U.S. finance candidate isn’t automatically the right fit for a subsidiary with an international parent company. The requirements differ in four fundamental ways:

1

Two accounting worlds.

U.S. GAAP in daily operations, group reporting to headquarters’ standards — the right leader operates fluently in both and translates between them.

2

Governance across distance.

Reporting discipline, forecast reliability, and expectation management with ownership only work across time zones and cultures with proven experience in exactly this setup.

3

Mid-size structure, not corporate bureaucracy.

In a U.S. operation with 50 or 150 employees, finance leadership does the work directly — cost accounting, close, audit, team. Anyone who needs a large staff underneath them will struggle here.

4

Hands-on, not just reports.

Real cost visibility doesn’t come from Excel alone. The right finance leader gets out from behind the desk, works directly with engineering and manufacturing, and rebuilds true product and project costs from the ground up — rather than bidding on numbers nobody has verified in years.

We test every candidate explicitly against these four dimensions — verified from career history, not from the interview.

Three pathsto the right finance leadership

Permanent Placement (Executive Search)

The classic path: a full retained search process with national market coverage and direct outreach. For CFO, Finance Director, and VP Finance roles built to last.

When the vacancy exists now, or the numbers need to become reliable immediately: an experienced interim CFO or Finance Director takes full responsibility on short notice — stabilizing reporting, forecasting, and close, leading the existing team, and managing communication with headquarters.

Interim-to-Permanent

Our integrated model: the interim stabilizes the function — and their operational insight defines the requirements for the permanent hire, which we run in parallel. Not a theoretical job description, but a role specification grounded in on-the-ground reality. Handover without operational disruption.

All three paths from one team — as a single coordinated mandate, not two parallel engagements.

From the fieldOne mandate, three challenges

After a failed retained search with one of the largest international search firms, the U.S. organization of a family-owned industrial group was left without reliable finance leadership. TH Bender placed an interim Finance Director within a short timeframe, stabilized reporting and the annual close — and ran the permanent search in parallel. The interim then moved to the group’s second U.S. site and implemented activity-based costing there from day one.

Frequently Asked Questionsabout U.S. finance leadership hires

Through systematic direct outreach — not job postings. Finance leaders with real experience in international subsidiary structures are a narrow pool; the best aren’t actively looking. We identify them directly, nationwide, and test explicitly for experience with international group reporting alongside technical depth.

That depends on the size and maturity of the operation, not the title. What matters is the scope of responsibility: independent close, cost accounting, forecast ownership, reporting line to headquarters. We help define that scope in the first conversation — often the right answer differs from the original assumption.

Move quickly — but don’t rush a permanent hire. An interim Finance Director can often be in place within two weeks, sometimes faster depending on availability, and establishes reliable reporting that gives you a factual basis for a permanent hiring decision without time pressure.

If you have time and confidence in the current setup: go permanent. If the vacancy is urgent or the starting position is unclear: interim-to-permanent — the interim stabilizes the function, and what they learn sharpens the permanent search. In practice, this is often the faster route to the right permanent hire.

Rarely on technical qualification. Almost always at the interface with headquarters: discipline in group reporting, cross-cultural translation, expectation management with ownership. That’s exactly what we test for — demonstrated, not claimed.

Often, yes — but only with the right kind of finance leader. Many companies are quoting against man-hour and equipment costs that haven’t been updated in years, so every bid is an estimate dressed up as a number. Fixing that takes someone who gets out from behind the reports and spreadsheets and works directly with engineering and manufacturing to rebuild true product and project costs. We screen explicitly for that hands-on capability — it’s different from, and rarer than, strong financial reporting experience alone.
