    The Client

The Situation: A Leadership Vacuum at the Worst Time

Our client was a leading German-Swiss investment and asset management company in the real estate sector, founded in the early 1980s and headquartered in Switzerland. The firm structured and managed high-quality commercial properties for an international investor base including high-net-worth individuals, foundations, trusts, and institutional investors. With subsidiaries across several European countries as well as North and South America, the company had a truly global presence.

The U.S. real estate market represented the single largest region, accounting for nearly half of the company’s total investment volume. The American subsidiary was active in the hospitality, senior living, and multifamily segments and was considered a key growth driver.

    The Challenge

    The Challenge

The long-standing CEO of the U.S. entity – with the company for over 30 years and personally close to the shareholders – was preparing for retirement. The objective was to identify and develop a successor who would initially work closely with the incumbent to gain a deep understanding of the market, processes, and metrics, and then assume full responsibility for the U.S. organization.

The role required an executive with proven expertise in U.S. real estate investments, particularly in senior living, multifamily, and hospitality, combined with a strong background in asset management. The ideal candidate also needed an entrepreneurial mindset, with the drive to take ownership of the portfolio, actively expand it, manage it effectively, and oversee successful exits. Experience in an international business environment and the ability to thrive in a European corporate culture were additional key success factors.

    The Solution

    The Solution

TH Bender identified a candidate who combined both the professional expertise and the intercultural competence needed to ensure a smooth succession.

The selected executive brought more than 20 years of commercial real estate experience, having previously managed large institutional portfolios valued at over $1 billion. This included approximately 7,000 units in the multifamily and senior housing sectors across 12 U.S. states, in various stages of development, lease-up, stabilization, and disposition. Her career began in real estate lending with a leading U.S. bank, structuring construction, bridge, and permanent financing, and she oversaw transactions totaling more than $4 billion.

Academically, she held an MBA from a U.S. university and a business degree from a leading German institution, complemented by study programs in France and the United States. As a dual citizen of the U.S. and Germany and fluent in multiple languages, she possessed the intercultural skillset to bridge the gap between the European parent company and U.S. investors.

Equally important, she was drawn to the autonomy and entrepreneurial spirit offered by the client’s smaller, agile corporate structure – a deliberate contrast to her previous roles in large institutional organizations. Having lived in Texas for more than two decades, she was deeply rooted in the American business culture while maintaining a strong understanding of the European ownership side.

    The Results

    The Results

The successful appointment secured the succession of the long-standing U.S. CEO in a timely and strategic manner. The new executive not only brought deep market and asset management expertise but also demonstrated the ability to consistently execute investment strategies and enhance the performance of complex portfolios.

Thanks to her international education and dual citizenship, she integrated seamlessly into the European-influenced corporate culture while acting as a credible counterpart to U.S. investors, banks, and external partners. The U.S. subsidiary thereby secured and expanded its role as the growth engine for nearly half of the global portfolio.

The placement provided both continuity and a strong foundation for further growth in the U.S. real estate market – particularly in senior living, multifamily, and hospitality. In hospitality, the company expanded its portfolio to include assets well known to European travelers. The new CEO also appears regularly as an expert on industry panels, strengthening the firm’s visibility in the U.S. investment community.
